What makes a healthy shoreline?\u00a0 What can you do and with what regulations must we comply to keep Lac Sam&#8217;s shores and water healthy?\u00a0 Here are some tips on shoreline do&#8217;s and don&#8217;ts:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A Healthy Shoreline<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Is\u00a0critical to the survival of the ecological and biological components of our lake.\u00a0 It has trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Filter and retain\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0fertilizer nutrients, pesticides, sediments and other pollutants that can contaminate water.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prevent shoreline erosion<\/strong>.\u00a0 The roots of riparian (shoreline) plants form a closely woven mesh offering strong mechanical resistance to erosion caused by waves and ice.\u00a0 A healthy shoreline is much more effective at preventing erosion than artificial barriers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide shade<\/strong>, helping cool the shallow water.\u00a0 Water that is too warm allows excessive growth of algae and causes heat sensitive fish species to go elsewhere.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Provides <strong>a rich habitat<\/strong> for fish and wildlife.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Reflects the <strong>natural beauty<\/strong> of the landscape, provides a degree of privacy and a natural wind break.<\/li>\n<li>A natural landscape <strong>requires little maintenance<\/strong>, leaving more time for relaxation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Don&#8217;t&#8217;s and Do&#8217;s<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Quebec Regulations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lac Ste Marie Municipal By-Law forbids mowing a lawn along lakes and waterways on a 10 meter strip if there is a slope going toward the water of less than 30%.\u00a0 When the slope is greater than 30% there is a minimum of 15 meters that must be respected and on which it is forbidden to cut grass.<\/p>\n<p>Quebec Ministry\u00a0 of Sustainable Development, Environment, Wildlife and Parks regulations (enforced by all municipalities in Quebec) state:<\/p>\n<p><strong>You cannot<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Remove vegetation inside the 10 m (sometimes 15 m) wide shore strip<\/li>\n<li>Plant a lawn to the water\u2019s edge (lawns don\u2019t have deep enough roots to withstand erosion)<\/li>\n<li>Add sand to create a beach<\/li>\n<li>Remove aquatic vegetation or rocks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>You are allowed to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stabilize an eroding shoreline by planting natural vegetation<\/li>\n<li>Create a 5 m wide gap in the vegetation to allow water access<\/li>\n<li>Build a floating, cantilever or pipe dock instead of a concrete dock<\/li>\n<li>For any project on your shoreline, you need a permit or certificate of authorization from your municipality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Recommendations:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Let nature take its course- you will have a rich diversity of plants.<\/p>\n<p>Minimize the disturbance of shoreline areas by maintaining natural vegetation cover.<\/p>\n<p>Replace lakeside grassed areas with native vegetation. Do not import fine fill. Planting grass is prohibited.<\/p>\n<p>Lightly prune trees to create discreet views of the water and surroundings. \u00a0Leave a few dead trees, in order to provide shelter and food for wildlife.
